I just had an installer put 30-40 nails in the middle of my putting green, where I have a slope from a raised hole. And this was before he added the infill. I thought that the infill was to weigh the turf down to the base, so nails were not needed.

Sometimes installers will use nails in the putting green turf to stabilize the installation. However, the. Type of nails used has to be without heads (or pins) and once installed, people won’t notice them at all. Regular 40D or 60D will probably not work as the mail heads will be exposed. I hope your installer has used the correct nails that not visible on your green,  of course it will always be ideal to only have infills to hold the turf in place without using any nails. Absolutely, we actually strongly recommend to use carpet stretcher for artificial grass installations. The way and purpose of using a stretcher is the same as of using it for carpet installations. Which infill is safest for children? I've heard silica sand in artificial grass contains dust particles that, if inhaled over a long period of time, can lead to health problems. Is there a better alternative?

All the infills on today’s market is relatively safe to use for artificial grass installation. The infills are meant to provide extra weight and hold the turf down better and help the blades to stand up. In most cases, if the infills are applied properly, it will sink all the way to the very bottom of the turf, you will not be able to see or get contact with it unless you spread open the fibers and put your fingers into the turf. However, to be 100% safe, we will recommend the wonderfill product which is sands coated with antimicrobial agent to prevent bacteria and germs and is extremely safe for your kids. Here is the link for the details of wonderfill: https://www.globalsynturf.com/products/wonder-fill. You always want to use the smallest meshed infills on artificial putting greens. Our putting greens were tufted very tightly and leaves very minimal room for infills to go in, you will have an extremely hard time to brush bigger grain infills into it. We would recommend to use either #30 or #60 mesh infills for all our putting greens. Our gopher wire will definitely work for wild rabbits once installed under the artificial grass. Any animals that can dig underground and potentially damage the foundations of turf base will be prevented by using gopher wires. However, it won’t do anything to animals that don’t dig such as squirrels. Mulch is used to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, keep the soil cool, prevent frost heaving in winter, and make the garden bed look more attractive. Organic mulches also help improve the soil’s structure, drainage, and nutrient-holding capacity as they decompose. It is common that people use mulch and artificial grass for designs of their landscape for different purposes, but in my opinion, mulch is a cheaper alternative to artificial turf and I will always recommend turf over mulch to cover landscape areas. To have a perfectly prepared base for artificial grass installations, you will need to make sure of the following:

1. Use the right materials to build the base: the bottom layer to be drain rock at about 2-1/2” thickness and top layer to be decomposed granite at about 1-1/2” thickness, both layers need to be wetted and compacted separately to 90%.

2. You don’t have to change the contour or slope of your area, in another word, you can install the turf along the slope or mild contour without excessive excavations.

3. As long as the surface of base (decomposed granite) to be smooth and solid, your installation will have a good result.

The base preparation for artificial putting greens is the same as regular artificial grass. So typically you will need to excavate about 4” of soil then put a bottom layer of 2-1/2” thick of drain rock and a top layer of decomposed granite at 1-1/2” thickness, both layers will be compacted at 90%. All you need is a sharp carpet knife or utility knife: when cutting the artificial grass aound the tree, it is important that you want to cut at least couple of times, first to do a rough cut leaving the turf bigger to overlap the tree, than do your final cut in a precise way. You will also need to make sure to score the cuts from the back of the turf. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us at 877 796 8873 or email us at [email protected], thank you.
