Artificial Grass Installation

What is your question?

I want to install artificial grass but my garden is muddy and with bad drainage. Is that possible?

2020-01-18T02:24:44+00:00

You can install artificial grass almost anywhere, including muddy area. As you might know that some areas are not suitable for real grass to grow such as muddy areas or shaded areas, artificial turf will be your perfect solution! Regardless what areas you install the turf, you need to make sure to follow the installation instructions: https://www.globalsynturf.com/installation-guides

In most cases, if your installations are done properly, you will never have issues for years to come.

Just make sure that the mud's consistency is not too runny/thin
That's good. We have to put some soil or gravel on it maybe so the foundation of the artificial grass is strong.
I think it'd be hard to install it on a muddy area so I suggest that you hire professionals to do it for you.

Does it take too long???

I have posted an answer regarding this question before, please go to this link: https://www.globalsynturf.com/how-long-does-it-take-to-install-artificial-grass

My answer to the question was for a 800 sf. artificial grass installation:

For your project particular, an experienced installer will take about 3-5 days, here is the procedure:

Remove the existing lawn will take about a day or less. Building the base should be another day, then laying the turf. Typically your project size will require 3-4 people crew, depending on how well the coordination of materials and no complications of electrical work (yard lights) and irrigation work (cap off and re-routing your existing irrigation system), highly experienced crew can easily complete such project really quickly. Always allow couple of extra days when trying to budget your time though, as reality is always not necessarily perfect when it comes to any landscaping projects, sometimes, the installation can take longer due to many cuts, seams, and edging work, regardless project like yours won't be more than a week.

According to some articles I've read, it's approximately 2-4 days.
Calling the experts will take lesser days to install it.

I have dogs and my main concern is, that my artificial grass might end up damaged and frayed

2020-01-16T13:37:42+00:00

At currently stage, we only manufacture the bigger pieces of artificial grass at 15’ wide and 100’ long, people buying our products at 15’ incrementally such as 15’ by 1’ and 15’ by 2’ and so on and so forth. Unfortunately we are not finishing up the edges of the artificial grass pieces.

Maybe we can seal it ourselves.
That's sad. I'm afraid shedding may happen to my artificial grass too.

I want to know if that's alright

2020-01-16T08:16:44+00:00

Absolutely! If you have a small piece being placed in the middle of your patio, you would like to secure the edges by using double sided carpet tapes.

I put it on my small patio, they look awesome!
We put it on the balcony and kids love it
They'll look amazing!

Depends on the size (or diameters) of the crushed rock. Bigger sized crushed rack can be used as a drainage base and finer crushed rocks (less than 1/4” in diameter) can be used for compacted smooth bases for the artificial grass to be laid on. You do not have to use the exact materials we specified as certain areas don’t offer those base materials, anything similar to our recommendations will work just fine. More importantly is the purpose of using such materials: for drainage and solid smooth surface preparations.

Remove all unwanted tree roots, mulch, and large rocks before the installation!
I didn't know that using crushed rock is part of the process, thanks for this.

Can I use this specific type of sand?

2020-01-16T07:52:12+00:00

You will not use sand as a base for artificial grass installations. Sand is not solid enough to serve a good purpose for artificial turf. We always recommend to use couple inches of drain rock and couple of inches of finer materials such as decomposed granite to quarter minus which to be compacted and solid to provide a smooth surface for artificial grass to be laid on. Here is the link to our installation instructions: https://www.globalsynturf.com/installation-guides

Sand also is not stable. It may make your artificial grass wavy.
Not sure if some installers are still using sharp sand for sub base

Any recommendations?

2020-01-16T07:18:25+00:00

All artificial grass installation need sand or other type of infills. Tow main reasons to use infills on artificial grass: to help the fibers standing up, and to help holding down the turf with enough weight to prevent turf from expanding and contracting as temperature changes.

On average, we recommend to use 2 lbs of infills per sf on artificial grass.

Oh. That's a lot of sand.

Is this possible? Will it turn out bad?

2020-01-16T07:15:37+00:00

Not directly because the gravels might be too big of articles as for the base of artificial grass. When it comes to artificial turf installation, the base is very critical, we need both drainage layers and finer smooth surfaces for turf to go on. If you are considering a permanent installation, please go to this page to get detailed instructions:

https://www.globalsynturf.com/installation/

If you are thinking about simple put artificial grass on gravels temporarily, as long as the gravels don't have sharp edges can cut into turf's backing, it will be ok, again only temporally, and please make sure your gravel surface to be as smooth as possible.

Very informative!
This just saved me from making a terrible mistake. Thanks for this!

How can I make sure that my artificial turf stays in?

2020-01-16T04:52:04+00:00

If you are referring to a permanent installation, you will need to secure your artificial grass down with nails along the perimeters, such nails can be found on our website, here is the link: https://www.globalsynturf.com/hardware

Then you will need infills to help holding the artificial grass down, and you can find all different type of infill materials from this link: https://www.globalsynturf.com/artificial-grass-infills

If you are doing a small piece install or a temporary install on dirt or soil, you can still use nails. If your installation to be temporary and on a solid surface, I will recommend to use double sided tape or velcro. To further discuss your application, please fill out this form and we will get connected with you asap, thanks: https://www.globalsynturf.com/free-quote
