Is it ever advisable to lay out artifical turf lengthwise to minimize seams? Our view of the grass would be toward the side of the nap in that case.

Yes, it is important to minimize seams when installing artificial grass, it is the same concept as carpet installations. However, given the fact of turf fibers are “directional” and with “memories”, people also need to consider where the tips of fiber facing toward. There is no absolute rules on which direction the turf fibers to be installed even though most experienced installers will try their best to have the turf tips facing the direction from which people looking at the turf the most. For an example, when turf is installed at front yard, the tips of fiber facing street will be ideal, when installing in the backyard, tips of fiber facing the house would be the choice. Again, such ideal installations might have to be compromised with minimum seams or other installation limits in reality, it is quite often to lay turf on wide yards to minimize the seams so the tips of fiber facing sideways.
