Artificial Grass Terminology

What is your question?

What is the DTEX average for your turfs? What is the industry average? What threshold should I look for to ensure good quality?

2020-05-22T01:12:01+00:00

This is a really good question and also technical! The Dtex is a measuring unit from the textile industry, it is the direct measurement of the yarn’s linear density by grams (0.035 oz) per 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). By that said, the higher the Dtex number the thicker of the yarns used for artificial grass, and therefore, it can be more expensive as more materials being used. High dtex yarns have higher standard requirements for manufacturing equipment and also make it not more difficult to produce turf with lower hourly outputs which can also be considered for higher production costs.

There is no absolute industrial standard for Dtex values for artificial grass overall, manufacturers can make whatever type of yarns at their wish, but for consumers it is always good to have the knowledge about such technical terms and make good purchasing decisions. There are a lot of really cheap low Dtex products out on the market now days especially on the internet, the prices can be very attractive, but they barely made to be even grass in my opinion, nothing but green colored thin yarn be put together: I guess you get what you are paying for in such cases. Global Sy-Turf is the tip artificial grass manufacturer in the world, all our products designed and made to last a long time. In term of Dtex, measured by each stitch (which normally consists of 20 strings of individual yarns), our product’s Dtex starts from 9000 up to 18000! Law of physics, the thicker of the material, the better of the resilience and durability: it is all about quality! More importantly, even with the best products in the industry, our pricing is also extremely competitive through our distributors and dealers nationwide. Of course, it is a combination of different technical values to make a superior product and the Dtex valve of the yarns is just one of those contributes.

What does the stitch count tell me about artificial grass? Why does the number of stitches matter?

2020-05-20T07:01:42+00:00

The stitch counts for artificial grass is a technical term which measures how many stitches of fibers per square meter: such term only apply for turf that made by using tufting machines. The more of the stitch counts of an artificial grass, the thicker is the product, meaning more fibers. The stitch count is determined by the gauge and stitch rates of the grass: the gauge the distance between the two rolls of stitching lines next to each other, very common gauges are 3/16”, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” and 3/4”; the stitch rate is how many stitches per 4”, normally starting at 10 go all the way to 20 on regular grass and to 40 for artificial putting greens. So the higher of the stitch count, the closer the fibers which make the artificial fuller, thicker (or more dense). While it not necessarily more expensive for higher stitch count products if the fiber being short. In another word, the combination of higher stitch count and taller fibers will definitely be using more materials and slower to make which certainly make such product more expensive.

How heavy is a roll of turf? Does the weight vary for each type?

2020-05-09T01:23:43+00:00

It depends on the type of artificial grass, the weight a full roll can be different. Artificial grass face weight determines the weight of a full roll, the higher of the face weight on a type of grass, the heavier of a roll will be. In general, artificial grass is bulky and heavy: they come in mostly at 15’ width and 75’ or 100’ in length, and our artificial grass face weight averaged from 35 oz to 100 oz per square yard. By that said, the roll weight of a typical full roll of turf ranges from 700 lbs to 1100 lbs. You definitely will need lifting equipment or strong manpower to handle them. We can provide all the weight information on any roll sizes of your request, please feel free to reach us via phone, email or simply fill out this online form for any questions regards to your artificial grass interests, thank you: https://www.globalsynturf.com/free-quote

I see that different turfs have different densities. What are the pros and cons of higher and lower density?

2020-05-07T01:03:53+00:00

In a simple and easy to understand term, the density of artificial grass tells you how much materials used in the products: the higher the density, the more of materials used, therefore, the more expensive of the turf. The density of artificial grass often reflected of the product specification as “face weight”, in another word, you might not find the term of density on an artificial grass specification sheet, but you will find the face weight on it: it is generally true that the higher of the face weight the higher of the artificial grass density. We design and manufacture our artificial grass products ranging from 40 oz to 92 oz on the face weight, such wide selections provide our customers a huge spectrum of product combinations for different applications purpose: Global Syn-Turf has the largest product selections and inventories in the industry. What is the face weight of the artificial grass? What does this tell me about the turf? How should this affect my decision when purchasing?

2020-05-02T05:33:13+00:00

Face weight is a technical specification term from carpet industry. Since artificial grass was invented by carpet industry and the constructions of turf is almost identical as carpet, many of the carpet spec terms are now being used for artificial grass products. There are four main components of artificial grass: straight fibers, thatching, primary backing and secondary backing. To make artificial grass a "grass", most people see only the fibers and thatching: again, this is very similar to the carpet, most of us see the surface of it, knowing how it looks and how it feels. Such visual part are also the main spec of artificial grass. The face weight of artificial grass is referring to the weight of straight fiber and the thatch per square yard. Straight fibers and thatch fibers are tufted onto the primary backing, so if we pull out all these fibers from an areas of one square yard and weight them, the result will be the face weight for that particular turf product. Very obviously, the heavier the face weight, the more of materials used, therefore the more expensive the product.

What does the backing weight tell me about artificial turf? Which part of the turf is the backing?

2020-04-29T05:10:37+00:00

The artificial grass consists of four major components: Straight finer blades, thatching, primary backing and secondary backing. When people are referring to backings, normally the combination of primary an secondary backing. Primary backing of artificial grass from Global Syn-Turf are two layers of polypropylene cloth as a standard, such backings not only provide solid base for grass constructions, but also help with the steadiness of our turf: to minimize the expansions and contractions when temperatures change, therefore, technically the thicker the primary backing is better. The secondary backing on the other hand can be a bit different, it is a glue layer to hold all the fibers together, so it is not necessarily all true the thicker the glue is the better. Here is why: the secondary backing is all about its functionality, we need to make sure the glue will sink through the primary backing to ensure the glue’s sticking and holding strength, our unique coating techniques can make sure process happen without wasting much of glue which meaninglessly increase the cost.

By all above said, the weight of backing is more of technical specification of artificial grass, which not necessarily reflects the functionality of the products, nor 100% contributes to the value of the artificial grass. Of course, too light of the backing weight should be red flagged while considering the overall quality of artificial turf product by understanding the typical backing weight ranges.

Why does the density of the turf matter? Does it make it feel more full or is it for aesthetic purposes?

2020-04-23T03:59:15+00:00

The density of artificial grass in plain term means how thick of the product is, this is more like a carpet: the higher the density, the more of materials used therefore in general, the product will be more expensive. The density of artificial grass will have the following functionality impacts:

1. Artificial grass with higher overall density  is considered to be better product which will have longer lifespan than lower density turf, this is especially true for areas with more wear and tear. However, the density can not be unlimited, beyond certain point, to be more specific, at about 90 oz or so, higher density beyond that point won’t necessarily provide longer lifespan of the grass any more.

2. Higher density turf tends to stand up better, with more resiliency. Such turf will be less likely to mat down.

What are the grass blades made of? What about the bottom? Are there any other components in between? Are the components safe and tested? If so, where can I find this testing?

2020-03-27T03:21:03+00:00

Our artificial grass consists of four major components:

1. Straight fibers which are made of PE (Polyethylene).

2. Curled thatch is made of PP (Polypropylene).

3. Primary backing is made of PP (Polypropylene): this is a double layer "cloth" for artificial grass fibers to reside on.

4. Secondary backing which is made of PU (polyurethane): this is the glue to bind turf blades on the primary backing.

You will be able to find all of our turf testings on our product specification page, here is the link:

Once you are on this page, you need to click on the product you are interested in and all testings will pop up on the right of your screen. Please feel free to reach us if you have any other questions or comments.

Great explanation thanks

I'm just a little intrigued

2020-02-05T04:42:50+00:00

The reasons for us to make artificial grass with different pile heights can be several:

1. The appearances: different geographic areas have different type of grasses, in order to best mimic the real grass in certain areas, we need to design and manufacture grasses in different colors and pile height combinations.

2. The applications: some application such as Pet Turf, a shorter pile will make more sense than tall piles, regular lawns might not need to be as short.

3. Installations: Some applications of artificial turf might not be specific on pile height requirements, in such cases, we will need to consider the installations as technically the taller of the pile, the more of infills might needed, so we won't have to recommend taller pile height products to simply increase the installation materials.

5
There different pile heights for different applications. Most people opt for longer piles though as it looks more natural.
I personally like a shorter pile. It just looks maintained, like I always have the time to mow it.

There are two components for artificial grass backing:

1. Primary backing: this is the cloth that artificial grass fibers to be tufted onto. We use polypropylene primary backings for all of our turf products. More importantly, we use two layers of such materials to enhance the stabilities and durabilities of our products.

2. Secondary backing: Once turf being tufted onto the primary backing, all fibers are loosely attached, in order to secure them from falling out or been pulling out, we use polyurethane glue to glue the fibers onto the primary backing. Polyurethane glues are very ideal for this application, as it will not react to moistures and have great binding power to hold fibers in place for years to come.

5
It seems like artificial turf is durable since it has two backings.
I think Polyurethane is better than rubber backing since it will not react to moistures.
That sounds pretty secure.
